We can see Green Tomatoes(mature unripe) generally found with the Red ripe ones. Before marriage i used to think what it is used for? Now i used to take those unripe ones too for making yummy curries.
This recipe i have taken from a Kairali Tv channel years back and used to make this Avial when ever i find some green tomatoes. Perfect side dish for rice paired with any pouring curry. Easy to make dish in a jiffy with out much effort. Try this tasty preparation at home and let me know the results.
Green tomato, chopped-2-3 big
Onion, chopped-1
Curry leaves-1 strand
Green chilli, chopped-1
Turmeric powder- 1/4 teaspoon
Red Chilli powder- 1 teaspoon
Salt- to taste
To grind:
Oil-2 teaspoon
Coconut- 1/2 cup
Jeera-1/4 teaspoon
Pearl onion/ small onion- 3
Garlic-1 clove
PROCEDURE:
- Chop the tomatoes in to medium sized pieces. Meanwhile add the coconut, jeera, pearl onion, garlic in a blender and pulse twice or thrice to make a coarse paste. Don’t make fine powder/paste.
- Heat oil in the pan and add onion, green chillies and curry leaves and slightly cook for a minute in oil. Then add the chopped tomatoes and cook in oil for 2 minutes.
- Then sprinkle little water and salt and close the lid and cook till the tomatoes become little soft (now the tomatoes colour changes to light pink and the peel starting to roll upwards from flesh).
- Now add the turmeric powder, red chilli powder and the ground paste to the tomato mixture and mix well .
- Cook till the raw garlic smell leaves about a minute or two. Check the salt and add if needed. Sprinkle some curry leaves and switch off the gas.
